Slussen is, and will continue to be, an important hub for travellers. Buses, the underground, Saltsjöbanan, cars, boats, cyclists and pedestrians all congregate at Slussen. The bridges at Slussen were still the only route linking north and south Stockholm, resulting in traffic chaos. New Slussen will have a new lock channel and two new broad water discharge channels. This will make it possible to release 5 times as much water at Slussen as today. Slussen is being reconstructed to become a vibrant meeting place with modern traffic solutions.

The old Slussen Lock in central Stockholm is being completely redeveloped to improve rail, water and road traffic flow and prepare the city for sea level rise and increased precipitation. One of the locks is being built on Refshaleøen in Copenhagen and will be towed all the way to Stockholm when completed.

Slussen, built in 1642, is the lock that separates the sea from the fresh water of Lake Mälaren. In 1935 the lock was extensively covered by Lundborg’s and William-Olsson’s “four-leaf clover” concrete road structure, now dangerously eroded.

The locks themselves allow passage between these two bodies of water (of different levels). The plaza by the lock: this will be Slussen’s focal point by the actual lock. Pedestrian and cycling lanes will surround the two water basis which make up a plaza of water. This will be a place to enjoy the sun, either on one of the terraces or at a café.
